My name is Richard, a software engineer at Shinetech, our team had been providing remote services to a client for over three years without ever meeting in person. Recently, we finally visited the client and worked on-site for two weeks.

When Remote Work Becomes a Lifeline

In early 2020, a century-old enterprise faced a critical moment—their sole technical leader was leaving after more than two decades. With no other developers in place and a 20-year-old legacy system to maintain, they urgently needed a partner to step in. That’s when they found Shinetech. Though the timing was challenging—at the onset of the global pandemic—Shinetech assembled a small team and began a remote transition. Working from scattered documentation, they quickly took ownership of the system, learning fast, solving urgent issues, and stabilizing operations under pressure.

Building Trust, One Night at a Time

The first months were intense. The Shinetech team, still part-time then, met with the client every evening over Zoom—often for hours. They listened, learned the business logic, and proposed improvements. Even on weekends and holidays, they responded to problems immediately. Over time, this effort built credibility. The team grew into a full-time dedicated group, communicating daily by email and weekly via video. The client, meanwhile, hired a U.S.-based CTO to work alongside Shinetech, and a collaborative rhythm formed. Through consistency and care, a sense of mutual responsibility took hold.

Three Years, Thousands of Emails, Zero Handshakes

Despite this close cooperation, the two sides had never met in person—until late 2023. With global travel finally possible, Shinetech visited the client’s U.S. headquarters. What began as a long-delayed onsite meeting turned into something deeply personal. The client’s founder, a veteran of over 40 years, hosted the team in his own home. He drove hours to the airport late at night to greet them, waited patiently during border clearance, and welcomed them like family. They cooked Chinese meals together, joined birthday parties, and sat around the dinner table discussing culture, life, and values.

That visit didn’t change the technical work—but it changed everything else. By living and working side by side, the teams formed deeper bonds. Communication grew easier, trust felt more personal, and mutual respect expanded beyond professional boundaries. Today, Shinetech continues to support the partner remotely, with the same team still in place. But now, behind every message or call, there’s a shared history. This is more than remote development—it’s a relationship grounded in empathy, shaped by experience, and strengthened by people who care about the work and each other.
